Right across the road from the Jacob’s Barracks the green Bastejkalns Park is situated. To say that this place is beautiful is to say nothing. In the summer days it is overcrowded with people admiring its fabulous landscape – waterfall, small bridges and cozy paths. Take a walk along the picturesque embankment of the City Channel.

St. John’s Yard (Jana Seta)

The John’s Yard is situated in the Old Town between Skarnu St. and Kaleju St. It’s one of the few places of the city where the old fortress wall is being preserved. Right here the castle of the first bishop of Riga (which was later given to the Dominican order). However, this small yard is famous not only with its history. In the hot days it’s full with tourists and locals (lucky to find the place) having beer and snacks.

St. John’s Church

St. John’s church can be considered one of the oldest cult symbols of Riga. It is first mentioned in the chronicle from 1209. It’s long and rich legend – it’s something to be told additionally. Just to point out that during the period from 1968 to 1973 it had been completely restored and its height made more than 123b metres.

At present this church is used not only for religious purposes. Besides divine services lots of architectural exhibitions and classic music concerts take place there . Thus the true admirers of classic music have the brilliant opportunity to enjoy the acoustic of the church.

The Fountain of the Vermone’s Park

The festive parties in the Vermone’s Park is a tradition which became even more popular after its reconstruction. Besides, almost every Riga associates his childhood with this park. It’s a true paradise for the kids: the rent of various toys, attractions and many other entertainments. Everybody who comes here is especially attracted by the fountain. It was established in 1869. It was dismantled in 1972 because it stopped functioning. In the summer of 1978 the area around the fountain was restored and well-designed. Then, the bronze copy of the fountain was established.

Cat House

Cat House is the building on Meistara10 which was constructed by the project of the famous architect F. Feiffel in 1910 as a place both for living and offices. It’s on of the most popular objects for the Rigans. The building has peculiar history which attracts the attention of the tourists. The house was named after the two cats perched on the roof. Next to the house there is a beautiful public garden where local artists and craftsmen have the opportunity to demonstrate and sell their works.
